What CSLB exam prep actually is
The California contractor exam, demystified.
The California Contractors State License Board (CSLB) administers two exams for almost every licensed classification: a state-specific Law & Business exam and a trade exam matched to your classification (B General Building, or any of the C-class specialty trades). Both are closed-book, multiple choice, computer-based, and given at PSI testing centers. The exams sample from public CSLB study materials and California code references — there is no secret bank of questions.
What "prep" means in practice: drilling thousands of paraphrased questions in the same blueprint weights the real exam uses, until you can answer the average item in under 60 seconds and explain why each answer is correct.
- Law & Business: required for every classification, regardless of trade.
- Trade exam: B General Building or a C-class specialty (C-10 Electrical, C-36 Plumbing, etc.).
- Both are computer-based, multiple-choice, ~115 questions, ~3.5 hours.
- 73% is passing on the trade exam at time of writing — verify on the CSLB site for your classification.
